Spaying & Neutering

THE FACTS

- In six years one female dog and her offspring, if none of them are ever spayed or neutered, can be the source of  as many 67,000 puppies.

- In seven years, one female cat and her young, if none of them are ever spayed or neutered, can produce as many as 420,000 kittens.

- Every day in the United States, tens of thousands of puppies and kittens are born. With 11,000 human births each day, there are clearly not enough homes for all these pets.

- Every day thousands of healthy dogs and cats are euthanized just because there are not enough homes.

- Each year in the United States, millions of stray animals suffer and die on our streets and back roads.

THE BENEFITS

- Spaying and neutering makes pets better and more affectionate companions.

- A neutered cat is less likely to spray and mark territory.

- Spaying female dogs and cats eliminates their heat cycles. The heat cycles can be very stressful. Females in heat can cry incessantly, show nervous behavior, and attract unwanted males.

- Spaying and neutering makes pets less likely to bite. Unsterilized animals often exhibit more behavior and temperament problems than those who have been spayed or neutered.

- Neutering makes pets less likely to roam the neighborhood, run away or get into fights.

- Spaying and neutering helps dogs and cats live longer, healthier lives.

- Spaying eliminates the possibility of uterine or ovarian cancer and greatly reduces the risk of  breast cancer.

- Neutering eliminates testicular cancer and decreases the incidence of prostate disease.

- Spaying and neutering reduces the pet overpopulation problem and reduces the millions of tax dollars spent each year on housing, feeding, and putting to death the unwanted animals found abandoned and/or surrendered to shelters. It also stops the needless suffering of millions of animals who wander the streets and countryside without food, shelter, and medical care, many of whom die agonizing deaths by starvation, predation, and accidents.
