About Us The OCHS was organized in the year 2000 by a group of Oswego County residents who were concerned about the inadequecy of county wide animal sheltering and welfare services in the county. Oswego County is one of the few in New York State that has no county wide shelter. Local sheltering operations vary widely in quality. Some provide basic shelter and food for the five days allowed by law. Some provide longer stays, coupled with more extensive adoption efforts. Policies that encourage spaying or neutering often are unenforcable. Cat population control is almost non-existent, with a single shelter option for only two municipalities. Some local government officials, other animal welfare organizations, private individuals, and businesses make heroic efforts, as much as their resources allow, to address the problem of homeless and abandoned animals. But, without a comprehensive sheltering program and adequate facilities to rely upon, they are overwhelmed by the demand. We want to address that need. The primary objective of the Oswego County Humane Society is to foster and provide for the humane treatment of animals. Together we can make a difference in the lives of animals and the people who care for them. |
